The photo from Bob’s basement this week is of yours truly and Ted Nolan doing the “Ted Nolan Show” on the Empire Sports Network. That photo was taken eighteen years ago and Ted still looks the same, I don’t!
The “Ted Nolan Show” was a weekly live program from the Harbor Club on the second level of then the HSBC Arena. Ted took questions from viewers and guest media members, which followed the same format as the Marv Levy and John Butler Shows. If my memory serves me I believe Chrisanne Bellas, who is now the VP of Broadcasting for the Sabres, was Producer of the program as well.
The “Ted Nolan Show” allowed me to get to know Ted a little better than just showing up for practice of post game news conferences. Ted was very easy to work with and the show was enjoyable for me while it lasted.
Of course Ted did not leave the Sabres on a good note the first time around, which has now been well chronicled, but he was very popular for the two seasons he did coach. Many Sabres female fans were taken by Ted’s good looks and I must admit it was one of the few shows I hosted that my wife Mary never missed.
It’s gratifying to me to see Ted Nolan back behind the bench of the Buffalo Sabres. I have said all along that I believe Ted is a special coach who has been able to get the most out of his teams. His style also creates a bond and loyalty amongst his players which was shown when Pat LaFontaine brought him back to Buffalo.
I would like to know what he’s drinking though because he sure hasn’t aged much over two decades.
