East Aurora, NY – On Saturday, July 18, 2015 at 1pm the Knox Memorial Cup, the signature fund-raising event of the Stables at Knox Inc.,will take place at the Neil and Barbara Chur Equestrian Center, Knox Field, in Knox Farm State Park for a second year.
The Stables At Knox Inc. is a new 501 (c) 3 organization formed by the people who were responsible for last year’s Knox Memorial Cup. The mission of The Stables at Knox, Inc. is to successfully develop a revenue generating, fund-raising organization that will be dedicated to helping the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation to rehabilitate, preserve and reuse the Harvey Staring Horton 1927 Polo Stables, its equestrian facility and polo field. This year’s proceeds will also benefit Heritage Centers Foundation.
At 1pm on July 18th the Western New York Collegiate Girls Squad and representatives from the Alfred State Team will open the event with a polo exhibition, which will serve to familiarize spectators with the sport. Immediately following the exhibition, two United States Polo Association (USPA) Sanctioned Teams will compete in a match.
The Champagne Brunch is sold out. Tailgate parking is available for $25. Admission is FREE to the general public. The public can watch the polo exhibition and match from the Knox Road side of the field.
The first Knox Memorial Cup took place on July 19, 2014 at the Neil and Barbara Chur Equestrian Center, Knox Field, in Knox Farm State Park. The event raised over $20,000 for Knox Farm State Park and the Mikey’s Way Foundation.
The Stables At Knox, Inc. is proud to support the rebirth of polo in our community. Seymour Knox Junior was an avid polo enthusiast and after purchasing the farm from his sister, Dorothy Knox Goodyear, polo became one of the major uses of the property. Seymour Jr. was an eight-goal polo player, Northrup Knox, an eight-goal polo player, and Seymour III, a five-goal polo player. Polo matches were held at the Knox Estate on Knox Field three times a week between the 1920’s and the 1980’s.
As in the days of polo events on the Knox estate, proceeds from the second Knox Memorial Cup will be used for charitable pursuits. The main beneficiary, of course, will be the equestrian stable in Knox Farm State Park; however, proceeds from the event will also benefit the Heritage Centers Foundation. The Heritage Centers Foundation serves as an advocate for individuals with developmental disabilities by securing community support.
