DON’T GET ME STARTED saw the business of the NFL penetrate the locker room when popular Fred Jackson was sent on his way Monday afternoon. Fred was a credit to his team and the community. It’s strange how fans become enamored with a player and express sadness when that player winds up with another team.

Here’s only a partial list of the productive, popular players who seemed to have played their last down in Buffalo, only to wind up elsewhere. Darryl Lamonica, the QB was sent to Oakland where he led the Raiders to a Super Bowl; Thurman Thomas left the Bills and played in Miami; Sack champion Bruce Smith followed Thurman out the door and played again for Washington. Fitzpatrick played for the Buffalo Bills and now starts for the New York Jets. It would take an extended column to list all the players who were not retained for the rest of their careers with the Bill so we won’t go into the exercise.

Fred Jackson gave everything to his team and the community and forever will be praised as one of the more popular players to hit One Bills Drive. Good luck to Fred.

Now the quarterback situation. In an earlier article I stated that I would support making Tyrod Taylor the starter IF coordinator Roman utilizes the “read option” offense for which Taylor is so well suited.
That seems to be the case despite the words from coaches insisting the QB stays in the pocket. Forget those instructions to Taylor. Let him do what he is capable of doing – just as Ted Marchibroda allowed Jim Kelly to do what he could do in leading the Bills to 4 Supers.

The other option the Bills had was to make Cassell the starter. That would mean that the Bills would run the ball on first and second down for about 6-7-8 yards and then have Cassell through those short tosses to move the chains. That could have been the case. Of course. Cassell would be a statue back there, vulnerable to a pass rush resulting in sacks.

As for EJ Manual – it baffles me how much of the fans and media continue to be critical of him, even after his superb performance against the Steelers Saturday last. If the Bills trade him and he performs well with his next team, I wonder what the reaction will be.

So far, it’s been quite an off season. Now the fun begins on the eve of the opener. Good luck Fred Jackson – good luck Tyrod Taylor on Don’t Get Me Started.
