The inaugural “Ilio DiPaolo Nickel City Duals” wrestling tournament took place Saturday, June 3rd at Buffalo RiverWorks with Team X from Warsaw taking the Gold Bracket championship. Team X defeated Team Niagara 60-10 in the championship match, going undefeated in five matches. Team Niagara consisted of wrestlers from Niagara Wheatfield, Grand Island, Niagara Falls and Iroquois.
The tournament was organized and run by the Section Six Coaches Association with the Ilio DiPaolo Scholarship Fund serving as the title sponsor.
Apex took third in the Gold Bracket with Brockport winning the Silver Bracket and Superior Academy from the Finger Lakes region taking the Bronze Bracket.
The 24 team tournament was open to wrestlers from grades 7 to 12 and officiated by certified high school wrestling officials.
The Section Six Coaches Association plan to make the tournament an annual event, growing next season to a 32 team bracket and eventually including a youth division.
