The UB Bulls wrestling team pulled off three upsets in the semi-finals of the MAC Tournament held at the Amherst Campus and as result claimed as many 2nd place finishes. In all UB will now send four wrestlers to the NCAA Nationals March 21st in Des Moines Iowa.
UB’s Blake Roulo, seeded 3rd, defeated 2nd seed Donnie Corby of Central Michigan 5-3 in his 149 lb. semi-final match to earn his spot in the finals and a trip to the NCAA Nationals next weekend. Roulo lost to Drake Houdashelt of Missouri 13-0 in the Championship finals.
Senior Mark Lewandowski, a Lancaster product, edged 2nd seed Zach Toal of Missouri 3-2 in the 165 lb. semi’s to win a berth in the finals and a trip to the Nationals. Lewandowski dropped a 8-5 decision to top seed Mike Ottinger of Central Michigan in the finals.
At 174 lbs. Senior John Martin-Cannon pulled off the biggest upset for the Bulls taking down top seed Todd Porter of Missouri 3-2 in the semi’s. Martin-Cannon then lost a hard fought 5-3 match in the finals against Cody Walters of Ohio, but earned a trip to the Nationals.
UB’s fourth qualifier for the Nationals is Max Soria at 125 lbs, taking 4th at 125. The NCAA granted The MAC four National tourney berths at 125 lbs because of the strength of that weight class.
“I think for the most part our guys performed pretty well. Not everybody, we need more guys to place and that was the difference in the team score,” head coach Jim Beichner said. “We qualified four for the national championships, and they’re all four quality guys who can go out there and score points for us at nationals. We weren’t happy with not having champions, because that’s why we’re here, but we will prepare ourselves for the NCAA championships two weeks from now.”
UB’s other place finisher was Erik Galloway a 5th place finish at 141 lbs.
