QB EJ MANUEL

Q: After looking at the tape, what’s the biggest thing you take away?
A: Haven’t looked at the tape yet, I will right after this. Off the thoughts from last night, just overall try to pick up on those all out blitzes and things like that. Not necessarily pick it up, but try to handle those situations the best we can.
Q: How new or unique were those blitzes?
A: Our defense does something similar to that and they did a lot of it in OTA’s. Just a matter of trying to make the play downfield when you have one-on-one match-ups like that in the secondary.
Q: You had quite a lot of throws that ended up out of bounds, that didn’t seem like you gave your receivers much of a chance. What do you attribute that too?A: Just got to get better at that.
Q: Is that a footwork thing?
A: Can’t say that it’s a footwork thing, just got to throw the ball inbounds and give them a chance.
Q: How do you maintain an even keel given the ups and downs so far?
A: The transition from last week in to yesterday? We got past the win, we were all excited obviously that we won. Any time you win you’re going to be excited about it, but we understood we had another game to play. We got ourselves in position to be close and win the game. They scored again and we didn’t so that’s the difference.
Q: How do you handle a loss? Do you run through some plays in your head?
A: Yeah. Definitely there’s always a few plays were I wish I had that back or I wish I had that throw back. I think the best thing is to learn from it and move forward. It’s a long season. We’ve got 13 games to try get in this playoff run. We’re not going to lose sight of that, just continue to get better and move forward.
Q: What were the plays from yesterday?
A: I can’t remember. All those thoughts were in my mind last night, not today. I’ll watch the film in a few minutes, so we’ll see.

Q: What was the most frustrating part for you yesterday?
A: Walking off the field with the loss. It seemed like the game still should have been tied and we should be going to overtime… I feel good about our team and about our offense. We came back and gave ourselves a chance to win, but we just didn’t pull it off in the end.
Q: EJ Manuel didn’t have a great day. How does he get past it and keep moving forward?
A: I don’t really see it as him having a bad day honestly. This is his third game in the NFL and he brought his team back from 6-17, 6-20, then brought us back to 20-20 and had us in the game. I don’t think that’s a bad game. That’s a competitive game out of a young quarterback. You can see improvements each week and we’ll get better every week.
Q: It seems like this team gets a lot of injuries. Is it harder to take?
A: I feel like the difference is if we win, I don’t think injuries would be as important, as upfront in the headlines as it is now. We’ve just got to change those losses and get the wins and then we wouldn’t be talking about those injuries.

Q: How do you avoid getting down over the injuries?
A: You just have to hope some of them aren’t serious. Hopefully we can get some of the guys back that were banged up… You’ve just got to move forward, the next man up mentality. Give the opportunity to someone else if some of these guys aren’t going to play.
Q: Did you get a chance to look at the film?
A: A little bit. Just a lot of mistakes on offense. Red zone execution was terrible. If we score on a couple of times that we get down there, it’s a totally different ball game. We don’t give up six sacks because we’re not getting teed off on in the second half. You get what’s coming to you when you play the Jets. If you dig a hole, that’s their game.
Q: Can you grade this on a curve knowing that it’s a young team’s first road game?
A: No. Some of the mistakes we made were terrible, myself included. We obviously have to bounce back. That was a game that we kind of threw it away. Credit them, they played well and they were able to hit some big plays on us, but that’s on us.

Q: Any update on the injury?
A: It’s sore, but it shouldn’t be anything that will keep me out this week. I should be feeling better day-by-day. Just taking it slow, just a little sore right now.
Q: Did you get twisted up in a pile? What happened?
A: I tried to look at it this morning and that’s the only thing I can think of. It happened the play right before we hit (Robert) Woods on the big 30-yard gain because I felt it while I was running down limping. That’s the only time I can think of that’s when it happened. Tried to look at it, but couldn’t really get a good shot at it or see what exactly happened. I know that was the play.
Q: Were you trying to go back in and held out?
A: Starting that second half I wanted to try and give it a go and see how it feels. The biggest thing was trying to keep it loose. I went out there and right before, I told Fred (Jackson) that if I don’t look like myself, come get me out of the game. I just felt like I couldn’t get power, that explosiveness off my leg. Ultimately I just came out of the game because to me I’m not going to put my team in jeopardy of hurting them and also I have to protect myself. The best thing for me to do is to swallow my pride at that moment and let my other guys go in there for me.

Q: How do you feel about returning to your former position at cornerback yesterday?
A: We’ll never know what positions are right now. We’ll find out tomorrow. I think last night was just an emergency type deal. We have a lot of great corners behind Leodis (McKelvin), but if they need me I’ll be there. As far as last night, it didn’t feel too different. It took a couple snaps for me to get back in to the rhythm, but other than that I felt fine.
Q: What do you make off all the injuries seeming to hit the secondary?
A: That’s just part of the deal. Injuries are going to happen. You can’t control them. You just have to do the best for the team and all of the guys who are behind the guy who is hurt. That’s the one thing we emphasize because you never know when your name is going to be called. When your number is called, you just have to go out there and give it your all.
Q: Do you feel vulnerable as a secondary?
A: Not at all. Like I said, we have great guys behind us. We have really good depth in our roster and in our DB room. I felt very comfortable, trust those guys, they work hard every day, so I don’t feel like there’s any worry.
