The Buffalo Bills have two top notch NFL running backs in CJ Spiller and Fred Jackson yet the running game is struggling. Last season Fred Jackson was injured most of the way, but Spiller blossomed into an elite back. Expectations were high this year for the pair, but the new no-huddle attack has produced a strong rushing attack. What’s up?
On his Monday night show on WBBZ-TV Fred Jackson expressed that the backs and the line need to figure out how to get in gear otherwise EJ Manuel will struggle. Without a proper run game teams can pressure Manuel without fear of running backs flying by them.
I have to say I expected more out of Coach Hackett’s offense. To a man everyone who knows Hackett has expressed to me how intelligent he is. Granted, a rookie at QB can make the best planned offense look pedestrian, but there hasn’t been a wide variety of plays.
One play in particular that seems to be absent is the screen pass. Jackson said the lack of screens was something they did identify after week two, but for whatever reason they were not called against the hard charging Jets.
Hackett also created a bit of a stir in training camp when he said in a radio interview on WGR that he would use CJ Spiller until he tapped out of a game due to exhaustion. Spiller has not had success except for two good runs against Carolina and he has not been a key part of a passing attack. Perhaps the struggles against the Jets will have Coach Hackett and Marrone show some creative thinking.
The Bills will face a strong defense once again Sunday in the Ravens and they will do it with a nicked up CJ Spiller. Time for adversity to bring the effort up a notch before this season slips away one month in.
