The Buffalo Bills will have their work cut out for them against the Baltimore Ravens Sunday. The defending Super Bowl champs may have stumbled in the second half against the Broncos in week one, but they have found their rhythm since and will a very formidable opponent.
The Ravens defensive stats are a bit skewed because of that second half against the Broncos at Denver, but expect them to apply plenty of pressure on EJ Manuel. The Ravens will study what Rex Ryan did to Manuel and certainly add their own mix.
This will be the week to see what Coaches Marrone and Hackett have under their caps to help Manuel deal with the pressure he’s sure to see in coming weeks. The NFL is a copy-cat league and what was effective against you last week will certainly be used against you this week.
The Bills offense has suddenly come under criticism nationally for being too simple. I brought up after week one that the playbook looked small for Manuel and last week against the Jets was the same case.
Coach Nate Hackett touted the Bills hurry-up attack during Training Camp and created expectations for a wide open attack. That certainly has not been the case, although they still run a no-huddle. Running the plays faster has not worn down the defense because the Bills make too few first downs. It’s the Bills defense that has gotten tired from going back out onto the field after a 3 and out.
The Baltimore Ravens will also test the Bills defense and QB Joe Flacco has the arm to do it. In fact, statistically Baltimore has been better offensively than the Bills first three opponents, including New England. With Buffalo’s banged up secondary I expect plenty of scoring by the Ravens.
