Now that I have wiped the sleep from my eyes from doing a Buffalo Bills post game show until 1 AM I wanted to add my two cents to the aftermath of the disappointing 37-24 loss to the Browns. Without Manuel, Johnson and for a time TJ Graham, the Bills were undermanned to pull off a road win. Yet, one thing that is clear, this Buffalo Bills team is better than any we have seen the past few years.
The defense worn down in the second half against the Browns because the Bills just had too many three and outs and the secondary also gave up some big plays, but when you look at the whole package it’s a much better unit than last season. Without their two best players in the defensive backfield the secondary has still played good enough to win. Then you throw in a play maker like Kiko Alonso and Mike Pettine’s aggressive style and there are reasons to be optimistic.
On offense EJ Manuel is still a work in progress and against the Browns he again threw too many passes without setting his feet, but he shows promise. With CJ Spiller and Fred Jackson the running game is fine, but for the love of God Coach Hackett, THROW MORE SCREEN PASSES! Spiller was a video game phenom last season because of the little screen passes Chan Gailey had in the offense. Against Cleveland they finally threw two and both went for first downs.
I think by week ten this Buffalo Bills team should be a force to reckon with. That of course is unless they continue to suffer injuries to their top players. If not, they will have both Gilmore and Byrd on defense and hopefully a healthy Manuel who should get better and better.
The Buffalo Bills may end up with a losing record this season due to their high number of injuries, but I see blue skies ahead for Bills Believers!
