Section Six had seven total finalists going into the Div I and Div II New York State high school wrestling championships at the Times Union Center in Albany Saturday night with three walking away with the top prize.
In Div II Cory Day claimed the 160 lb crown with a 8-3 victory over top seed Jacob Null of Dolgeville (Section III).
Top seed Robbie Penhollow of Falconer followed Day’s win with a convincing 8-1 win against Jace Filion of Northern Adirondack (Section VII) at 195 lbs.
Finally, Mike Rigerman, also a number one seed, was victorious for Pioneer high school at 220 lbs in Div II with a 5-3 win over Keagan Carmenatty of South Seneca (Section V).
In all Section Six had five finalists in Div II with Andy Lucinski from Newfane dropping a 3-0 decision to Section Five’s Jace Schafer of Palmyra and Zach Braddell of Tonawanda losing 4-2 to John Worthing from Tioga.
In Div I Willie McDougald from Niagara Falls, a 2018 New York State Champ at 132 lbs, fell by fall at 3:29 to now five-time State Champion Adam Busiello from Eastport South Manor. McDougald’s matchup against Busiello was much anticipated after Busiello edged Willie 3-2 in the finals of the Eastern States in January.
At 152 lbs Warren McDougald from Niagara Wheatfield lost a 3-2 heart-breaker to Dan Mauriello of Hauppauge in sudden victory overtime. Muriello escaped with just three seconds remaining the final thirty second extra period to claim the title.
Other place finishers were Tyler Bartolomei of North Tonawanda placed fifth at 113 lbs Div I, Justin McDougald of Niagara Wheatfield was fifth at 132 lbs Div I, Ryan Stencel of Lancaster placed fifth at 152 lbs Div I, Adam Daghestani of Grand Island took fourth at 160 lbs Div I, Patrick Walson of Olean took fifth at 182 lbs Div I, Dalton Gardner of Fredonia took fourth at 138 lbs Div II, Jimmy Kramer of Falconer took sixth at 145 lbs Div II and
Johnny Putney of East Aurora took third at 152 lbs Div II.
