Buffalo Bills rookie quarterback EJ Manuel will not play Sunday against the Miami Dolphins due to a sprained left knee. Coach Doug Marrone made the announcement Wednesday and told reporters that quarterback Thad Lewis will start Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.
Marrone said he was “110%” sure Manuel would start the final road game against the New England Patriots and cited Manuel’s decreased mobility after the knee swelled up Tuesday as the reason to sit him against Miami. This is the third knee sprain Manuel has suffered in his rookie year and the second that went undetected until the day after the game.
The switch pits Lewis against Miami for the second time this season. The third-year passer guided Buffalo to a 23-21 win over the Dolphins back in Week 7, one of three starts Lewis has made in relief of Manuel in 2013.
Coach Doug Marrone also told reporters that wide receiver Steve Johnson was excused from practice following his mother’s death and likely won’t be available Sunday against the Dolphins.
