The Buffalo Bills have selected Florida State quarterback EJ Manuel with the 16th round pick. The Bills had traded down to 16 with the St. Louis Rams, picking up a second 2nd round pick in the process.
Manuel is 6’5″, 240 and has all the skills to be a starter in the NFL. Speculation was that Doug Marrone may go with his Syracuse starter Ryan Nassib, but Manuel impressed the entire staff. Manuel told reporters he was happy to be coming to Buffalo. “I called my agent after my visit with the Bills and said man I really hope the Bills take me. It’s a football city … I felt at home”
Bills captain Fred Jackson said,” I’m excited to see what he can do. Big athletic guy with a strong arm. Can help us and he’ll get his shot to.”
Bills GM Buddy Nix,”This guy has leadership qualities and he is smart. You need to be able to play in the wind and the cold. As far as arm strength there is no question..he’s a huge man”
Bills Coach Doug Marrone said he was not conflicted on selecting Manuel over Nassib,” We were able to take the best QB for us here in Buffalo. It’s significant when you take a QB … everyone has to believe that guy can win ”
Manuel has run the option at Florida State and has a strong arm. ESPN analyst John Gruden praised the pick and said he fell in love with Manuel’s ability when they met.
