Niagara Wheatfield walked away with four individual champions Saturday to lead all Division I schools at the 2018 Section Six wrestling championships held at North Tonawanda high school. The Falcons had five wrestlers make it to the finals with Collin Coughenour winning at 99 lbs, Justin McDougald at 126 lbs, brother Warren McDougald claiming the 145 lb weight class and Joshua Thibeault taking the 160 lb championship in sudden death overtime.
Top ranked Lancaster was next with three individual champions led by Parker Rozler at 113 lbs, Ryan Stencel at 152 lbs and Joe Andreessen taking the 220 lb championship.
Niagara Frontier League champion Grand Island had seven wrestlers advance to the finals and claimed two titles with Daniel Emblidge winning the 170 lb crown and Connor Kenney taking the title at 182 lbs.
Vinnie Cantanzaro named MOW
Williamsville North’s senior Vinny Cantanzaro defeated NW’s Jacob DeWolf at 138 lbs with a controversial takedown at the buzzer, but the victory earned the senior the MOW trophy for his efforts. Teammate Cam Walter also won a title for the combined Will North & East squad at 195 lbs.
All winners and designated wild card entrants will advance to the NYSPHSAA wrestling championships Feb 23rd in Albany. Full results and photo gallery below.
